The San Francisco Women Artists Gallery accepted my work in their first show of the year Textures and Patterns. This is so fitting for my work as I revel in exploring both of those aspects of working with mixed media.
Pretense by Saskia van Kampen. 18 x 23.5 inches.
Accepted in to the show were two pieces from my Web series where I sew together a paper collage allowing the spaces between the pieces allow light through creating a very delicate, lace-like structure.
Planned Parenthood by Saskia van Kampen. 23.5 x 20 inches.
The Web series disrupts the intended messages found in printed artifacts through the application of vintage lace and thread. The printed artifacts are collected from vintage magazines, advertisements, and pamphlets that have messaging about what a woman should be and how to behave. Combining the technique of sewing with the collaged paper is meant to demonstrate the fragility of these notions in our contemporary world—how women, men and the LGBTQIA2S+ communities are pushing against these notions in different ways.
The show runs January 9 – February 2
